City Scans - Space Syntax in Munich
Space Syntax has produced a spatial analysis of Munich for a new exhibition, "City Scans" that celebrates the 850th anniversary of the city. A computer-based model of Munich has been constructed using geographical data from the city’s Land Surveying office. The model demonstrates how the spatial layout of the city influences the movement and interaction patterns of people on foot and in vehicles. It also forecasts how these patterns are changed by the impact of new developments, identifying social and economic opportunities as well as risks.
The exhibition explains the unique, evidence-based approach that Space Syntax takes to planning and design. Five case studies, selected from throughout the city, show how the model works at a variety of scales to tackle a number of issues:
Marienplatz - the spatial qualities of an
urban square.
Fuenf Hoefe - shopping and promenading
in the city.
Muenchner Freiheit - the relative vitality of
urban centres.
Theresienhoehe - the integration of
new city quarters.
Freiham - the transition between the city and its
countryside surroundings.
