London Festival of Architecture 2008

As part of this year’s London Festival of Architecture (LFA 2008), Space Syntax organised a City of Spaces walk. The walk took place at 11am to 4pm on 19th July 2008, starting from St. Paul's Cathedral, London.

Designed as a walking lecture, the walk explored both well known and hidden spaces in the unique City of London area, the spaces between its buildings, and the specific spatial culture that has been created within it. Along the way, experienced Space Syntax tour guides discussed and illustrated the fundamental links between the layout of the City – its ‘movement network’ – and the way people navigate between and experience its spaces.

The walk was originally created by Professor Bill Hillier as part of the Advanced Architectural Studies MSc at University College London, but has been edited and shortened significantly for the wider audience of the LFA2008.

The LFA is a celebration and exploration of the city's buildings, streets and spaces, aimed at London’s residents and visitors alike. The Festival includes street installations, exhibitions, guided walks, cycle rides, boat tours of the city's river and canals, parties, design workshops, debates, breakfast talks, and weekend street markets.
