The reality of creating sustainable communities
London, 2nd December 2008
Speaking alongside Sir Bob Kerslake, the head of the new Homes and Communities Agency, Tim Stonor presented the results of an 18-month knowledge exchange project, "i-VALUL", which has generated new tools to value the social end economic properties of place including crime patterns and land values. Tim’s presentation, entitled “Placemaking in a regional context”, described the various components of UrbanValue, the suite of tools that Space Syntax has developed with the input of 20 project partners from the public, private and community sectors including CABE, Colin Buchanan and London 21. The new tools help to identify public sector development priorities, while offering private sector investors a greater level of confidence and a more secure framework in which to invest.

New methods in urban simulation
22nd November 2008
Jorge Gil presented the GIS (Geographic Information System) platform for urban simulation used by Space Syntax, including a custom toolkit developed in-house. The GIS platform offers an operational urban model that is multi-layered, multi-scale and relational, with the network of streets and public space as the construct connecting these levels together. The presentation provided an overview of the platform's operation and of the components of the toolkit, including examples of its application to urban design projects.

Masterplanning and urban design
London, 20th November 2008
Tim Stonor's presentation entitled, ‘Creating sustainable places’ addressed the idea of sustainable urban masterplanning through the twin issues of “people-first” planning and collaborative practice. To illustrate his argument, he drew on examples from Space Syntax’s recent work, including large masterplanning projects in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and Sao Paulo, Brazil as well as a smaller UK based project at the Elephant & Castle.

Urban flow density: the Space Syntax experience
Venice, 14th November 2008
Tim Stonor spoke about the importance of taking spatial layout into account when measuring urban density. Comparing cities throughout the world, he demonstrated how the geometry of the street network determines patterns of movement and socio-economic transaction and how, by considering the effects of space, a more sophisticated definition of density can be made.

Placemaking: Creating a destination
London, 30th October 2008
Tim Stonor gave a presentation about the role of space in the creation of local urban centres. Drawing on recent work by Space Syntax into the valuation of urban layout, Tim discussed the notion of "pervasive centrality" ie that cities such as London are made up of centres at every scale; and, that these centres can be characterised in terms of the differing ways that they bring together local and global patterns of movement.
